Pantanal Jaguar Photography: Best Season, the Boats & Six Shots

The dry season, roughly July to October and peaking in August–September, is the finest jaguar photography on earth: the water recedes and the cats hunt along exposed riverbanks around Porto Jofre. It is boat-based, so keep a fast shutter for the boat's movement and a high-ISO body for the low light of dawn and dusk.

The six shots

Jaguar on the riverbank

A cat walking or resting on an exposed bank. Shoot from the boat near eye level; keep 1/1000s+ for the boat's drift.

Jaguar hunting a caiman

The signature Pantanal action. Anticipate at the water's edge, 1/2000s+, high ISO, and shoot the whole burst.

Jaguar swimming the river

A powerful low-water frame. Freeze the wake and hold the head sharp as the cat crosses.

Giant otter with a fish

The "river wolves" — behaviour and interaction. Expose for the wet fur before it blows out in the sun.

Hyacinth macaw or jabiru

The colour and scale counterpoints — the macaw's blue against green, or the jabiru at its nest.

Caiman and reflection at dawn

Get low from the boat over still water for a mirror reflection in the first light.
